I've written about what I missed during my childhood (Shatong) and it's got me thinking into how the future would look like 55 years from now.
My present consists of listening to classics such as The Beatles, Bob Marley, The Beegees and Debbie Gibson songs. What would 'classics' mean when I'm 80? Britney Spears? Backstreet Boys? Kpop? LADY GAGA?! Would I, 55 years from now, be listening to a Retro Radio Station and listen to 'Hit me Baby One More Time' instead of 'Yesterday, all my troubles seem so far away'?
And in addition, what would happen to folk songs such as Atin Cu Pung Singsing and Sitsiritsit? Would they be replaced by a song composed by Lito Camo and sung by Willie Revillame? Would our National Folk Dance be the Spaghetti Dance by Sex Bomb Girls?
I write a lot. I doodle, I sketch. I can wait for hours and hours if I had a pen and paper with me. So I wonder what would happen to Pens and Papers. Will it be a thing of the past? Will it be a museum artifact? Will my granddaughters and grandsons be surprised that ink actually exist? I sure hope not. I really can't imagine myself writing on an electrically-powered pad that won't allow erasures because you can simply edit. I love seeing those erasures (the one where you strike a line on a word, phrase or a sentence).
What would happen to newspapers? paperbacks?
And what about the most celebrated IPads?
I am the most curious person. And sometimes, my curiosity gets to me.
local folk songs to be sung by willie revillame and spaghetti to be the new national folk dance? heaven forbid! that mental pic just gave me the shivers :)
ReplyDeletei think pen and paper, the paperbacks, even the newspapers (especially tabloids, haha) will be with us for a little longer. i think so, and i hope so - for they spark a different and more unique kind of magic than the ebooks and ebook readers and ipads.
although typing on the keypad is more convenient than writing, i still love to write with pen and paper and smell the ink and paper, old or new.
haha! i can't imagine passing through a news stand without reading the headlines, "Mister, pinutol ang ari ng sariling Misis!" (That is true, by the way. I really did see that.)
ReplyDeleteI'd like it better if memory cards would be implanted in our brains... and download everything in it. Now, that's convenience! Imagine waking up in the morning, already knowing the news!
ReplyDeletekelvin, that would be a literal "information overload!" :)
